TV shows about solving murders are nothing new, but how about murder mysteries that are narrated by the person who was murdered?

Tonight at 10pm ET/PT, Investigation Discovery debuts a new series, Stolen Voices, Buried Secrets, which reveals murders from the point of view of the person who was killed. While the all-seeing narrator knows who was responsible, the series allows viewers to piece together who is the culprit based on clues from investigators, family and friends as each story unfolds.

On tonight’s first episode, Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old college student, is found beaten to death in the local swimming pool’s pump room. After three years of an intense manhunt, apparent DNA evidence and seemingly reliable witnesses, investigators have failed to solve Ali’s murder. But Ali’s father refuses to give up and eventually helps crack the case by appealing to a national audience. While investigators and family members search for the truth, Ali’s fictionalized narration pleads for them to follow the facts from her perspective — before her killer strikes again.

The second episode airing tonight is about Ellen Robb, who lives a picture perfect life in Upper Merion, Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter. The quiet town  is shaken when her husband, a respected university professor, finds Ellen brutally murdered in their own kitchen. At first glance, police and community members suspect a robbery gone wrong. As the investigation continues, police uncover a secret that Ellen kept hidden for many years from friends and family. Armed with a new theory the police make an arrest that shocks everyone.

Update: We’ve been getting many questions about the background music in the promo for Stolen Voices, Buried Secrets. The song is Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” as performed by Gary Jules.
